2024 MLK Celebration – Scottsdale’s celebration serves as a signature event for the entire valley that includes nationally renowned speakers representing a myriad of diversity perspectives honoring the history and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. Battinto L. Batts, Jr. is this year's featured speaker. Dr. Batts is dean of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, an award-winning journalist and educator with deep experience in philanthropy and nonprofit administration. Blue Zones Project | Launch Event – In partnership with the city of Scottsdale, HonorHealth, Cigna Healthcare, and Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona are announcing the launch of Blue Zones Project in Scottsdale to help residents live better, longer lives. Honoring Preserve Pioneers – On Oct. 3, 1994, the Scottsdale City Council took a historic step when it passed Resolution No. 4103, formally establishing the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Scottsdale Memorial for the Fallen Dedication – Residents of the Scottsdale area, including nearby Native American communities, have served with distinction in the United States military for more than 100 years. During the nation's armed conflicts and in the course of military duty, 66 of those service members have made the ultimate sacrifice. Their names are now permanently engraved on the granite faces of the Scottsdale Memorial for the Fallen. The new memorial was dedicated Saturday, March 18, at Scottsdale City Hall’s Memorial Lawn. Veterans Day Commemoration – This year’s keynote speaker is Michael McLaughlin, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy (retired), who had a 30-year career in the U.S. Naval Submarine force. Michael graduated from high school in Mesa, Arizona, and is a 1981 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. Tuesdays at 3 and 8 a.m.; noon, 4, 7 and 10 p.m.
Yesterdays: Spring Training – From the old Channel 11 archives comes this interview show featuring former city manager Dick Bowers talking with Charlie and Gwen Briley, former owners of the Pink Pony restaurant. Charlie recalls the drive to bring baseball spring training in Scottsdale starting in 1956. They reminisce about the baseball stars who came into the restaurant, including Dizzy Dean, Joe DeMaggio and Roger Hornsby.
