Netflix documentary series explores Blue Zones

Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, a four-part Netflix documentary series launched Aug. 30, just a few months ahead of a Blue Zones Project Scottsdale community kickoff. The series takes viewers around the world with Blue Zones founder, a National Geographic Fellow and New York Times best-selling author, Dan Buettner, to discover five unique regions of the world where people live extraordinary long and vibrant lives. The people in these five regions, blue zones, share similar characteristics: a plant-slant diet, natural movement, and putting family first, which have been proven to promote longevity and health in residents. Viewers will explore the original blue zones, be immersed in their culture and lifestyles, and see how Blue Zones is applying the research in communities across the United States, now including Scottsdale.

HonorHealth, The Cigna Group and Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona announced the launch of Blue Zones Project Scottsdale in May 2023 as the first community in Arizona to work towards becoming Blue Zones certified. Blue Zones Project Scottsdale is a nearly five-year comprehensive, collaborative effort with the city of Scottsdale that involves the entire community working together to transform the environments where people live, work, learn and play to measurably improve community well-being, resilience and economic vitality.

Becoming a Blue Zones Community is a three-phase process. Phase 1, the Readiness Assessment was conducted in March 2022 and included a structured exploration of the community powered by collaboration to build a plan for change.  Phase 2, the foundation and planning phase, began in February 2023 and entails collecting information and data from the community to identify strengths, challenges and opportunities that will end with a blueprint in December identifying the community-led work that lies ahead.  Phase 3, a full Blue Zones community transformation initiative will begin with a community kickoff event on Jan. 13, 2024, at Scottsdale Civic Center when the Life Radius® model- the perfect storm of change with a full focus on people, places and policy is implemented.
