Diamond Fire update

About 4 p.m. June 27, a wildland fire was reported in the vicinity of 130th St & Ranch Gate Road — about two miles north of Tom's Thumb Trailhead.

Emergency response units including Scottsdale Fire and Police converged quickly to start fighting the fire, which quickly swelled to an estimated 700 acres. An evacuation order was given and remains in place, affecting a number of homes in the area (almost all in unincorporated Maricopa County).

Wind drove the fire southeast, pushing it out of Scottsdale into McDowell Mountain Regional Park in Maricopa County.

As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, fire crews continue work to contain the fire. The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management is now the incident commander.

The Red Cross has setup an emergency evacuation center at Cactus Shadows High School (5802 E. Dove Valley Road).

Scottsdale's Fraesfield and Tom's Thumb trailheads will be closed Wednesday, June 28.
