Neighbors Helping Neighbors and Matthew Patzlaff named 2023 Spirit of Scottsdale award winners

Scottsdale’s Neighborhood Advisory Commission recently named the 2023 winners of the Spirit of Scottsdale Awards.

Established in 2019, this annual awards program recognizes the people and places that embody the “Spirit of Scottsdale,” particularly through neighborhood stewardship and the ways in which a person or organization contributes to Scottsdale physically, aesthetically or socially.

The 2023 Individual Award winner is Matthew Patzlaff. Matt is the principal of Navajo Elementary and was nominated for his dedication to the students and his craft. Whether he’s playing sports with the kids or securing grants to support their well-being, Matt’s daily efforts reflect a genuine passion for his job and the community he serves. He truly embodies the Spirit of Scottsdale.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors is the 2023 Organization Award winner. Originating as a Scottsdale-based charity in 2013, Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a nonprofit organization that has made a difference in Scottsdale for more than 10 years. The nonprofit is run entirely by volunteers who are passionate about helping their neighbors in need. Every dollar donated to Neighbors Helping Neighbors goes directly to the community, supporting programs that benefit children, veterans and low-income families. The organization works closely with local partners to provide essential services and resources to those who have no other options.

For 2023, the Neighborhood Advisory Commission received 17 nomination submissions, recognizing the work of 16 individuals or organizations. The winners were recognized Tuesday, March 19, with a presentation of the awards during the Scottsdale City Council’s regular meeting.

The nomination period for 2024 will open in May. Learn more about the Spirit of Scottsdale Awards
