Currently, the four lanes of traffic that travel Thompson Peak Parkway along with the two bicycle lanes merge into two travel lanes and two bicycle lanes over the exiting bridge.

Adding a second bridge will allow for the continuance of the four vehicular lanes of travel along with two bicycle lanes completing Thompson Peak Parkway to its ultimate cross-section and improving access to nearby parks and schools. 

A westbound, 2-lane bridge will be built that mirrors the existing bridge that includes bike lanes and a sidewalk.  When complete, the new bridge will provide a continuous 4 lane roadway with bike lanes on Thompson Peak Parkway from Scottsdale Road to 100th Street.

Most of the funding for this project was by voters in the 2019 Bond Election, Question 2 Community Spaces and Infrastructure, Project 62 Build a Bridge on Thompson Peak Parkway Bridge over Reata Pass Wash to Improve Safety. The remainder of the project is funded by the 0.2% Transportation Sales Tax.  

Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2026 and take approximately 12 months to complete.  

When DC Ranch was built, the city and developer entered into an agreement that required the developer of DC Ranch to design the Thompson Peak Parkway Bridges over the Reata Wash but only construct one due to a lack of traffic volume in the new community.

As the area developed and traffic volume warranted it, the city was required to build the second bridge on the east side of the roadway to accommodate northbound travel. 

Over time with development in the area, the Thompson Peak Parkway bridge has kept up with the vehicular traffic volume however with an increase of bicycle traffic along this segment of roadway, the bridge has become a safety concern for motorists and cyclists.
