Colorado River Conditions: Current Status and What It Means for Scottsdale

Current Status: Colorado River Conditions Remain Serious

The Colorado River remains under significant stress after more than two decades of drought, declining runoff and a hotter, drier climate.

For 2026, the Colorado River is operating under a Tier 1 Shortage under the current operating guidelines. While Arizona is experiencing a reduction in its Colorado River allocation, Scottsdale's municipal water supply is not reduced as a result of the current Tier 1 Shortage.

However, the Colorado River's challenges extend well beyond the current shortage declaration. Lake Mead remains at historically low levels, and the operating guidelines that have governed the river since 2007 expire at the end of 2026.

The Bureau of Reclamation released its Final Environmental Impact Statement for post-2026 Colorado River operations in July 2026. The new guidelines will establish how Lake Powell and Lake Mead are managed beginning in 2027.

Why is the Colorado River in trouble?

The Colorado River system is experiencing the combined effects of more than two decades of drought, hotter temperatures, declining runoff and a long-term imbalance between the amount of water available and the amount being used.

Snowpack in the Rocky Mountains is an important source of water for the Colorado River. Warmer temperatures can cause more precipitation to fall as rain rather than snow and can reduce the amount of runoff that ultimately reaches reservoirs.

The result is a river system that produces less water than it historically has.

The Bureau of Reclamation's post-2026 analysis recognizes that future Colorado River hydrology is highly uncertain and that robust and flexible management strategies will be necessary to respond to changing conditions.

What is happening with Lake Mead?

Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the Lower Colorado River Basin, remains at historically low levels.
