Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV)

What is CCTV?

The Scottsdale Police Department's Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) network consists of several types of cameras positioned throughout the city to support officer safety, improve situational awareness, assist investigations, and help protect public facilities and spaces. These cameras are coordinated through Municipal Security, Traffic Management Center along with the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) and serve different operational purposes depending on their location.

Types of Cameras

Park Cameras

Installed at some city parks throughout the city to improve safety and help protect public recreational spaces.

List of parks with deployed cameras:

  • Indian School Tennis Center – Exterior cameras covering surrounding areas and the park can be seen in some views.
  • Reatta Sports Complex – Covers the surrounding park area.
  • McDowell Mountain Ranch Skate Park – Covers surrounding park area to include soccer fields.
  • Vista Del Camino – Posted on City building facing the park area.
  • Adaptive Service Center – Exterior camera has ability to view the park.
  • City Hall – Multiple exterior and PTZ cameras that can view the Civic Center Plaza.
Traffic Cameras
Mounted on existing transportation signal poles to provide live views of roadways, parking lots, and business frontages during traffic incidents, pursuits, and calls for service. These cameras are managed by the Traffic Management Center.
Fixed Cameras

Installed on various City of Scottsdale and Scottsdale Police Department buildings to provide continuous coverage of department and municipal property.

How We Use CCTV

The CCTV network helps Municipal Security, and the RTCC personnel support responding officers by providing live situational awareness during calls for service, monitoring incidents occurring on or near public property, protecting municipal facilities, and supporting criminal investigations when appropriate.

Privacy Protections

Privacy protections are built directly into the technology and traffic cameras home position is set for the center of the intersection. This allows operators to monitor roads and adjacent parking lots. Any public record requests for camera footage is first reviewed and redacted by Police Record’s personnel to blur out any unrelated private properties.

Who Can Access the Cameras

Municipal Security, in conjunction with City IT and impacted PD stakeholders, maintains limited and restricted access to the Municipal Security camera system for specific operational and strategic purposes. Access is not broadly available to sworn personnel, though, designated members of sworn PD are provided access to pertinent cameras or specific sites based on their operational responsibilities and need.

These permissions are specifically authorized through the appropriate chain of command and are limited to those personnel and stakeholders whose duties require access for purposes such as site security and operational response. RTCC and other impacted Scottsdale PD sworn personnel may have live-feed access to individual cameras or specific sites when that access has been appropriately authorized.

Video Retention

Traffic camera footage is retained for 14 days. Footage from fixed and park cameras are retained for 30 days before being automatically overwritten unless preserved as evidence in an active investigation.
