  • Bell Road from Greenway Hayden Loop to 82nd Street | Through Feb. 9

Scottsdale issues update on phishing scam after resident reports payment.

The city of Scottsdale is providing an update to a recent public alert about a phishing scam in which criminals impersonate city staff and send fraudulent invoices by email.

The city has confirmed that one resident submitted a payment in response to a scam message. The incident was reported through the city’s Integrity Line and has been referred to the Scottsdale Police Department, with coordination underway with the Federal Bureau of Investigation Cyber Division.

The scam appears to be targeting residents and businesses who have recently interacted with the city’s Planning and Development services.

There is no indication that any city of Scottsdale systems were compromised. This incident does confirm that at least one resident was directly affected.

The city is also aware of similar phishing activity reported by the city of Buckeye, where scammers sent fake invoices while posing as local development and planning agencies. In both cases, messages used deceptive email addresses that included the "@usa.com" domain.

What residents should know

  • The city of Scottsdale does not request payment through unsolicited emails from individual staff members.
  • Legitimate city payments are processed through official city systems and secure webpages, not through direct email requests.
  • This phishing attempt is not related to the city’s new planning and permitting system. City staff will not email residents asking for payment through that system.
  • Only trust official city emails that come from addresses ending in @ScottsdaleAZ.gov.
  • Check the sender’s email address carefully. Scam messages often come from external domains that do not end in a legitimate city address.
  • Do not click links or download attachments from unexpected messages.
  • When in doubt, go directly to the city’s official website or contact the city’s call center at 480-312-3111.

If you believe you received a phishing email claiming to be from the city of Scottsdale, delete it immediately and report it to the city through Constituent Services.
