More rain on the way for Scottsdale
A slow-moving weather system is expected to bring periods of moderate to heavy rain across the Valley today and into tonight, with the greatest impacts in northern and eastern Maricopa County. While Scottsdale is not under a Flood Watch, nearby areas are – and residents should remain prepared as the system continues to move through the region.
The National Weather Service reports that parts of Maricopa County may see an additional 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rainfall through tonight. A 10–15% chance of thunderstorms could bring brief heavy rain, gusty winds, lightning and small hail.
Another weather system is expected late Thursday into Friday, bringing more widespread rain to the region. Temperatures will remain below normal through Saturday before warming back into the seasonal range early next week.
Scottsdale may experience short periods of intense rainfall, slick roadways and reduced visibility. Residents are encouraged to stay alert to changing conditions and take steps now to protect themselves and their property.
Use caution outdoors
Before visiting Scottsdale’s parks, sports fields, recreation areas or the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, check for trail or facility closures related to wet or unsafe conditions. The city’s call center at 480-312-3111 will have the latest information. Real-time updates are also available at ScottsdaleAZ.gov.
In Scottsdale, flooding often impacts the Indian Bend Wash, which can quickly fill with storm runoff and close unbridged cross streets. Motorists should obey all warning signs and avoid unbridged crossings.
Fast-moving water can be dangerous – never attempt to cross flooded washes or roadways.
Sandbag availability and flood protection tools
Scottsdale provides sand and empty bags as a courtesy for residents who use sandbags to help shield their homes during storm events. Supplies can run low during major weather systems, and availability cannot be guaranteed.
Sand and bags are available on a first-come, first-served basis at:
- Scottsdale Water Campus
Near 88th Street and Union Hills Drive - Scottsdale Police Department District 1
7601 E. McKellips Road
Bags are free; residents should bring their own shovels to fill them.
Residents looking for additional flood-prevention options can explore tools such as flood diversion tubes, portable flood fencing and water-absorbing barriers, all of which are available through hardware stores or online retailers.
