Stardust Building Supplies receives Sustainable Scottsdale Award

The Scottsdale Environmental Advisory Commission recognized Stardust Building Supplies as the 2026 Sustainable Scottsdale Award honoree. The award recognizes exceptional environmental contributions and advancements by individuals or entities that positively impact the Scottsdale community.

The non-profit was recognized for its deconstruction program, which diverts usable building materials from landfills and makes them available for reuse. As an alternative to traditional demolition, Stardust’s team carefully disassembles and salvages high-quality, usable materials from houses and businesses before renovation or teardown, for a nominal fee. Recovered materials such as cabinetry, lighting, doors, windows, plumbing fixtures and appliances are then sold at substantial discounts to the public at two valley reuse centers. Stardust also partners with contractors and welcomes property owners to self-remove materials for drop-off or pick-up.

“Through its innovative reuse model, Stardust diverts thousands of tons of building materials from the waste stream each year, giving these materials a second life while making them accessible and affordable to the community. Their work exemplifies the type of measurable, community-focused sustainability leadership that this award is intended to recognize,” said Scottsdale Environmental Advisory Commissioner Alexandra Craig, explaining why the commission selected Stardust for this year’s award.

To date, the organization has diverted more than 100 million pounds of construction material from the landfill since its inception.

In addition to its environmental impact, Stardust partners with local retailers to collect overstocked, returned, or slightly damaged inventory and redistributes it to non-profit organizations. Since 2012, the Gifts in Kind program has distributed more than $169 million worth of toiletries, housewares, and building supplies to hundreds of non-profits, including Scottsdale-based Hirsch Academy and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale.

Thirty-five percent of Stardust’s Valley-wide services are provided to Scottsdale citizens and businesses.
