Open house planned for Stormwater Management Master Plan

City News

An open house is scheduled for the public to learn more about the city’s proposed Stormwater Management Master Plan (SWMMP).

The proposed master plan incorporates the city’s recent stormwater infrastructure improvements to present an accurate assessment of potential flood hazards and recommends further measures to mitigate future flooding.

The SWMMP combines existing, updated, and new stormwater studies into one comprehensive plan. “Over the last 20 years, hydrology and hydraulic studies have been conducted for various areas of Scottsdale. However, urbanization, new rainfall data and advances in flood modeling technology require an updated planning-level evaluation,” explained Drainage and Flood Control Manager Hasan Mushtaq. “The proposed plan provides a cohesive understanding of Scottsdale’s stormwater system capacity, stormwater hazards and infrastructure to support enhanced flood resiliency and public safety.”

The master plan’s study area includes an analysis of washes, storm drains, local streets, arterial corridors, and natural drainage areas throughout Scottsdale. Areas with the potential for flooding, drainage deficiencies, or infrastructure constraints have been identified for further evaluation or stormwater mitigation measures.

During the open house, attendees can view the results of the stormwater studies via display boards and other project information, understand the objectives, process, and preliminary findings and engage directly with city representatives.

Additional information about the proposed master plan can be found on the project website.
