You may spot this small ATV on Scottsdale sidewalks - here’s what it’s doing

Residents may soon spot a small all-terrain vehicle on Scottsdale sidewalks and at intersections - part of the city’s comprehensive update to its Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan.

Working with consultant Matrix, the city will deploy an ADA “profiler,” an ATV outfitted with LiDAR scanners and other sensors that measure sidewalks, curb ramps and intersection features across public rights-of-way.

Crews anticipate covering about 40 miles per day as they assess individual neighborhoods and larger arterial roadways.

What residents can expect

Field work will continue through January 2026, primarily during daylight hours on weekdays. Crews will assess sidewalks, curb ramps and intersections throughout Scottsdale’s public right-of-way using smart levels, tape measures and a LiDAR-equipped ATV to document conditions. The profiler will operate at low speeds, and all personnel will follow standard traffic control and safety practices to minimize disruption.

Why this matters

The Scottsdale ADA Transition Plan evaluates the city’s buildings, programs, services, activities and communications for ADA compliance. The updated plan will identify barriers, recommend fixes and help Scottsdale prioritize and fund improvements - advancing equal access and a more inclusive community.

Over the next year, residents will see assessments at city facilities, parks, trails and other public areas. In the years that follow, expect visible upgrades such as improved curb ramps, smoother sidewalks and crosswalks, clearer signage and easier access to city programs and services.
