SPD efforts on community safety and homelessness

The Scottsdale Police Department (SPD) remains committed to protecting public safety, addressing community concerns, and ensuring individuals experiencing homelessness are connected with resources and support services.

From January through July 2025, SPD officers across all three districts, McKellips, Via Linda, and Foothills, recorded nearly 3,000 contacts with individuals experiencing homelessness. During this same period, officers coordinated 67 camp cleanups, made 452 service offers, completed 479 formal field contacts, and made 597 arrests when criminal offenses were committed.

Year-to-Date Activity (January 1 – July 31, 2025)

  • Contacts: 2,925
  • Camp Cleanups: 67
  • Service Offers: 452
  • Arrests: 597
  • Formal Field Contacts: 479

These activities reflect the Department’s balanced approach of compassion and accountability, pairing enforcement with outreach. Officers consistently connect individuals with shelter, treatment, and support services, while also responding to complaints and safety concerns from residents and businesses.

Standing Patrols and Targeted Operations

Each district maintains dedicated day and night patrols in high-activity areas, utilizing foot and bike officers to increase visibility and responsiveness.

McKellips District: Officers focused patrols on south urban parks, wash areas, libraries, and community gathering spaces such as Chaparral Park, Eldorado Park, Vista Del Camino, and the Civic Center. SPD also conducted operations addressing citizen complaints and deployed portable signs discouraging panhandling at multiple high-traffic intersections, including Hayden and Camelback, Miller and Indian School, and Scottsdale and Thomas.

Via Linda District: Officers regularly patrol parks, trailheads, and libraries, including Cholla Park, Lost Dog Trailhead, Mustang Library, and Mountain View Park. Panhandling signs were also rotated in response to community feedback, including at Shea Boulevard and Scottsdale Road, and Shea Boulevard and 90th Street.

Foothills District: Proactive patrols continue at locations such as Horizon Park, Gateway Trailhead, Reata Sports Complex, and Pinnacle Peak Park to deter unsafe activity and connect individuals with support resources.

Collaboration

SPD partners closely with the City of Scottsdale’s Human Services Department, Crisis Response teams, and nonprofit organizations, including Phoenix Rescue Mission. These partnerships ensure that when officers encounter individuals in need, referrals to shelter, treatment, and long-term support are available.

A Message of Commitment

“Our officers are on the frontlines every day, balancing compassion with accountability,” said Chief Joe LeDuc. “We remain committed to the safety of our community while treating every individual with dignity and ensuring that help and resources are always part of the response.”

The Scottsdale Police Department will continue to focus on responsive enforcement, proactive patrols, and connecting individuals experiencing homelessness with the support systems they need to succeed
