SkySong marks 20 years as a driver of innovation and economic growth in Scottsdale

SkySong, The ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center, is celebrating its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of transforming southern Scottsdale into a thriving hub for technology, entrepreneurship and global business.

What began as a bold vision to redevelop a declining retail center has become one of Arizona’s most influential innovation campuses. Developed through a partnership between Plaza Companies, Arizona State University and the city of Scottsdale, SkySong is an example of the city’s commitment to strategic economic development and public-private collaboration.

Over the past 20 years, SkySong has attracted companies from around the world and supports thousands of high-quality jobs in advanced technology, global business services and health innovation. The campus has also played a key role in helping international companies establish a presence in the United States while connecting Arizona-based startups with university research, talent and mentorship.

“SkySong represents the kind of forward-thinking investment that helps shape Scottsdale’s economic future,” said Scottsdale City Manager Greg Caton. “For two decades, this partnership has supported high-quality jobs, attracted global businesses and strengthened our position as a leader in innovation. It is a strong example of how collaboration between the public, private and academic sectors delivers lasting value for our community.”

The 42-acre mixed-use development was intentionally designed to foster collaboration among startups, Fortune 500 companies, researchers and students. Its distinctive shade structure has become a recognizable landmark, symbolizing the innovation and connectivity that defines the campus.

Economic impact studies estimate SkySong’s contribution at $58.2 billion over 30 years.

While SkySong has already delivered significant impact, the project is not yet complete. More than 300,000 square feet of additional commercial space is still planned, representing continued opportunity for job creation, business attraction and long-term economic growth in Scottsdale.

As SkySong looks to the future, continued expansion in emerging technologies, global connectivity and Arizona State University’s leadership in research and innovation are expected to drive its next phase of success.

Today, SkySong stands as a model for how cities can invest in knowledge-based industries to create a resilient, diversified economy and deliver long-term benefits for residents and businesses.
