Headline News

Scottsdale awarded ADEQ recycling grant for fire station food waste diversion pilot.

The program will install food recycling units in station kitchens to divert food scraps from landfills and convert them into reusable material, making Scottsdale the second city in the nation and the first in Arizona to implement this type of initiative within a fire department. Because fire stations operate 24/7, they provide an ideal setting to test scalable food waste reduction solutions. Scottsdale Solid Waste Services will manage implementation, staff training, data tracking and evaluation, with quarterly reports and a full assessment at the end of the pilot year. The city will measure diversion results, operational impacts and costs to determine long-term feasibility. Scottsdale is one of 14 statewide recipients of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality’s Fiscal Year 2026 Recycling Grant Awards, which support innovative efforts to reduce landfill waste and advance recycling.
