Scottsdale invites community input on draft Shade and Tree Plan

The city of Scottsdale is inviting residents to review and provide feedback on a draft Shade and Tree Plan designed to expand shade across the community and create cooler, more comfortable outdoor spaces.

The Scottsdale Shade and Tree Plan for the Built Environment was developed to guide how shade infrastructure can be implemented, expanded and maintained across both public spaces and private development throughout the city.

The draft plan is the result of a comprehensive study that examined existing shade conditions, surface heat data, historical temperature trends and best practices used by other desert communities. It also reflects community feedback gathered during earlier outreach efforts.

The plan outlines practical strategies for increasing shade while maintaining Scottsdale’s commitment to desert sustainability. Recommendations include selecting desert-adapted trees, integrating water-harvesting practices and incorporating shade structures in a variety of public and private settings.

“Shade is fundamental to daily life in Scottsdale and residents have indicated they want to see more shade in public and shared spaces,” said Taylor Reynolds, Scottsdale principal planner. “They’ve also emphasized the importance of selecting appropriate, desert-adapted trees and maintaining a strong commitment to water efficiency. This feedback guided the creation of practical, balanced strategies that maintain, expand and encourage collaboration on shade infrastructure citywide.”

The city is seeking community input before finalizing the plan. Residents are encouraged to learn more and share feedback by visiting the project website or attending one of the upcoming open houses:
