Scottsdale Fire Department expanding services with new ambulance annex

In response to the growing demand for high-quality emergency medical services, the Scottsdale Fire Department is proceeding with planned expansion of its operations in southern Scottsdale by building a new ambulance annex adjacent to Fire Station 601, located at 1901 N. Miller Road.

“This expansion supports Scottsdale’s city-operated ambulance program, ensuring continued rapid and efficient response to both emergency and non-emergency calls,” said Scottsdale Fire Chief Tom Shannon.

To share information on the expansion project, the city will host an open house from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at the Eldorado Community Center, 2311 N. Miller Road. There will be no formal presentation; residents are encouraged to stop by anytime during the event to view proposed plans, ask questions, and learn more about the project.

The annex will serve primarily as a dormitory and operational base for ambulance personnel, featuring essential interior spaces such as offices, a kitchen, dining area, bathrooms, and medical storage. The facility will also include three vehicle bays, housing two ambulances and one supervisor vehicle.

The annex will be built just north of Fire Station 601 and will use the existing driveway at the Granada Road alignment. Planned exterior improvements include landscaping, on-site parking, a mechanical equipment yard, and perimeter security fencing—all crafted to complement the surrounding community and preserve local aesthetics.

In 2024, the city of Scottsdale transitioned ambulance services in-house, phasing out the previous private ambulance contracts. This shift requires additional space to accommodate staff and emergency vehicles to maintain seamless service delivery.

The Fire Station 601 service zone includes about 37,500 residents and visitors; the station has been in operation at this location since its construction in 2011.
