Scottsdale celebrates 75 years with stories, history and community exploration

Scottsdale is marking the 75th anniversary of its incorporation by inviting residents to celebrate the people, places and stories that shaped the community.

The celebration continues Thursday, Sept. 10, with the unveiling of “Hands-On History: Residents Reflect on Scottsdale’s Years,” a collection of memories and reflections from 75 prominent Scottsdale residents.

Many of the contributing authors will be available to sign copies during a special event at 6 p.m. at Civic Center Library. Admission is free, but advance registration is requested.

Copies of the book can be purchased through Amazon. Books will not be available for purchase at the library.

And the celebration recently reached the big screen with the premiere of “Diamond in the Dust,” a new documentary chronicling Scottsdale’s transformation from a small desert community into a world-class city. The film premiered to a sold-out crowd at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West.

Those who could not attend the premiere can now watch “Diamond in the Dust” on YouTube.

Residents also can experience Scottsdale’s history firsthand through the Scottsdale 75 Picture Scavenger Hunt.

The all-ages community challenge encourages participants to explore 75 locations representing the people, places and history that have shaped Scottsdale. Stops range from internationally recognized destinations such as Taliesin West to local landmarks such as the Mustang Wall at Mustang Library.

Participants use the Seeker app to visit designated locations, take selfies, earn points and collect city swag while learning more about the West’s Most Western Town. Those who complete all 75 stops and bonus activities will be entered to win grand prizes.
