Scottsdale Awarded $17.4 Million Regional Grant to Rehabilitate Thomas Road

The city of Scottsdale has been awarded a $17.4 million grant from the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) to rehabilitate and improve a key stretch of Thomas Road, spanning from 56th Street to 74th Street.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $24.8 million.  Scottsdale will contribute $7.5 million to the project. The grant funding is part of MAG’s Arterial Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Program (ARRP) for fiscal years 2026, 2027, and 2028.

“This project represents a major investment in the city’s transportation infrastructure,” said Scottsdale City Manager Greg Caton. “We have allocated more than $40 million over the next year to improve our current street conditions and with this additional funding we are investing well over $65 million to improve our transportation network. We are grateful to MAG for their support in helping us to repair this critical, aging infrastructure and improving the safety of our community.”

Project Highlights Include:

  • Reconstruction of the pavement of the roadway
  • A new right turn bay at 68th and Thomas
  • Replacement of outdated traffic signals
  • Enhanced grading and drainage improvements
  • Installation of ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
  • Restoration of lane striping to current configuration

In addition to surface and other transportation improvements, an additional city project will include critical upgrades to water and sewer systems located beneath the roadway.

Design work is set to start in early 2026 and construction is anticipated to begin in early 2028.
