MAG approves funding swap, securing $29.29 million for Scottsdale Road project
The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) has officially approved a funding change that secures the full $29.29 million needed to advance Scottsdale’s major improvement project on Scottsdale Road between Jomax Road and Dixileta Drive.
The decision, approved today by the MAG Regional Council, finalizes a months-long effort by the city of Scottsdale to shift the project from federal funding to regional Proposition 400 sales tax funding. The funding swap became necessary after design changes at Scottsdale Road and Dynamite Boulevard meant the project no longer aligned with the original federal grant criteria.
To keep the dollars in the region and ensure Scottsdale did not lose its allocation, MAG worked with the city to identify eligible projects where the federal funds could be reassigned. In turn, regional half-cent sales tax funds were moved into Scottsdale’s project to replace them. According to MAG, the exchange maintains full funding for Scottsdale while keeping all involved projects compliant with the Arterial Life Cycle Program.
Adjustments to accommodate the swap were incorporated into MAG’s FY 2026–2030 Transportation Improvement Program before receiving final approval.
City Manager Greg Caton said the decision ensures a critical north Scottsdale roadway improvement stays on schedule.
“This action by MAG protects a significant investment in our community,” Caton said. “Our Transportation and Infrastructure team worked closely with MAG to secure a solution that keeps this project fully funded and moving forward, supporting mobility and safety for residents and visitors.”
MAG officials praised Scottsdale’s proactive work on the issue, noting the city’s responsiveness and coordination throughout the process.
With funding now secured, Scottsdale will continue advancing design and construction planning for the roadway project, which is a key regional corridor.
