Care about Scottsdale’s future? Bring your perspective to the table
Scottsdale’s trails, libraries, historic places and neighborhood development have something in common – residents help guide their future.
The city is accepting applications through Friday, Nov. 13, for volunteer boards, commissions and committees that help inform local decisions. For residents who want to get more involved, these positions offer a chance to study issues, hear from neighbors and put their experience to work for the community.
“Residents bring a perspective we can’t get any other way – their experience living in Scottsdale,” said City Clerk Ben Lane. “Serving on a board or commission is an opportunity to ask questions, listen to different viewpoints and help work through issues that matter to your community.”
The openings span interests from environmental stewardship and transportation to veterans’ services and oversight of voter-approved bond projects. Residents can explore each group’s responsibilities and meeting schedule to find a fit for their interests and availability.
Current openings include:
- Board of Adjustment (2 openings)
- Building Advisory Board of Appeals (1 opening)
- Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee (3 openings)
- Development Review Board (3 openings)
- Environmental Advisory Commission (1 opening)
- Historic Preservation Commission (1 opening)

The City Council reviews applications, nominates candidates for interviews and makes appointments. Applications remain on file for one year, allowing residents to be considered for future vacancies.
Appointees must follow the city’s Ethics Code, and first-term members must attend ethics training and orientation within 90 days of appointment.
