Scottsdale prosecutor receives statewide felony prosecutor award
The Arizona Prosecuting Attorneys' Advisory Council (APAAC) has named Scottsdale Senior Assistant City Prosecutor Jared Johnson its 2026 Small Jurisdiction Felony Prosecutor of the Year, recognizing his outstanding work prosecuting a complex felony conflict case on behalf of La Paz County.
Johnson received the statewide honor for successfully prosecuting a fatal commercial vehicle crash that occurred Sept. 3, 2023, in Parker, Ariz. The collision claimed one life and seriously injured five others. A vehicle fire following the crash destroyed critical physical evidence, preventing investigators from confirming or disproving the defendant's claim that sudden brake failure caused the collision.
Despite those evidentiary challenges, Johnson conducted a meticulous, evidence-based prosecution that resulted in a 2025 plea agreement for one count of manslaughter and multiple counts of aggravated assault. The defendant was sentenced to 17 years in prison followed by five years of supervised probation.
"Jared's work on this case demonstrates the professionalism, expertise and unwavering commitment to justice that define the Scottsdale City Attorney's Office," said City Attorney Luis Santaella. "His ability to navigate an exceptionally difficult prosecution and secure accountability for the victims reflects the high standards our attorneys bring not only to Scottsdale, but to communities across Arizona when called upon to serve."
The case came to Scottsdale after La Paz County requested assistance because of a prosecutorial conflict of interest. Under Arizona's system of reciprocal support among prosecutors, jurisdictions routinely ask another prosecuting agency to independently handle criminal cases when ethical considerations require it. Scottsdale is frequently asked to assist because of its recognized expertise in prosecuting complex vehicular crimes.
"This award is also a reflection of the exceptional talent within our City Attorney's Office," Santaella said. "Our prosecutors are respected throughout Arizona for their expertise, professionalism and willingness to assist other jurisdictions while continuing to serve the residents of Scottsdale every day."
In addition to this case, Johnson continued supporting prosecutors and law enforcement agencies throughout Arizona. During the past year, he advised Graham County on two felony charging decisions, provided statewide training through APAAC and Scottsdale's Traffic Prosecutor Resource Program, and maintained a demanding Scottsdale caseload that included DUI and misdemeanor prosecutions.
APAAC annually recognizes prosecutors whose work demonstrates exceptional legal skill, integrity and dedication to public service. Johnson's selection highlights both his individual accomplishments and Scottsdale's reputation as a leader in criminal prosecution.
