Burglars use stolen property gains to fund luxury car rental

22-year-old Aiden Cornish and 20-year-old Trent Kennedy were arrested by Scottsdale Police detectives on July 23 for burglarizing three unoccupied homes in Scottsdale between July 14 and July 22 and two burglaries in Paradise Valley on June 13 and June 15. The burglaries involved the loss of about $100,000 in high-end kitchen appliances. In one instance, the suspects used proceeds from selling the appliances to rent a Lamborghini for three days.

Scottsdale detectives began investigating two residential burglaries that occurred overnight between July 13 and July 14 near Dynamite Blvd and Alma School Road. While looking for leads on the suspects, they recalled information shared from Paradise Valley Police detectives who were investigating two similar burglaries in their city.

Paradise Valley Police were already investigating two burglaries of high-end appliances between June 13 and June 16. They shared that information with Scottsdale Police to see if our detectives were working similar cases. Paradise Valley Police also had neighborhood video footage showing a possible suspect vehicle from one of their cases. A vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description was caught on a photo RADAR camera on June 15, driving towards one of the Paradise Valley victims' homes.

The license plate captured by the photo RADAR camera came back to a black GMC truck belonging to Aiden Cornish. The camera images also caught someone in the vehicle's front passenger seat of the truck with Cornish. Through other investigative means, the front passenger was ultimately identified as Trent Kennedy. The truck and trailer were observed later that morning, leaving Paradise Valley loaded with appliances and chairs, which were reported stolen from one of the burglaries.

Cornish and Kennedy were also linked to the fifth burglary, which occurred around 10 p.m. on July 22 at a home near Shea Blvd and 131 Street. Traffic cameras caught the GMC and trailer leaving the area of the burglary with stolen appliances on the trailer. The suspects then drove to a home in Tempe that belonged to Cornish with the stolen property.

On July 23, around 9 a.m., Scottsdale detectives observed Cornish driving the truck, trailer, and stolen property to a storage facility in Phoenix. Once there, detectives pulled the truck over and arrested Cornish without incident. Kennedy was later located and arrested by detectives around 3 p.m.

During his interview with detectives, Kennedy told them Cornish would sell the stolen appliances and would pay him for helping steal them. He told detectives that after the first Scottsdale burglaries, the two took the money and rented a Lamborghini for three days. This was confirmed by social media posts of them driving at high speeds on the freeways.

Detectives conducted multiple search warrants, but unfortunately, the only items recovered immediately after the arrests were the appliances from the July 22 Scottsdale burglary loaded on the trailer. The estimated total loss from the five burglaries is more than $100,000.

Cornish and Kennedy were both booked and held in custody on burglary charges. Cornish was also booked for trafficking in stolen property.

"The collaboration between Paradise Valley Police and Scottsdale Police was instrumental in the capture of these two suspects. We have incredible partnerships with our neighboring law enforcement agencies and regularly share information. By leveraging the latest investigative tools and technology with traditional information sharing, we are making it increasingly more difficult for criminals to commit and get away with crimes." - Scottsdale Assistant Chief of Police, Chris Watson

With additional information learned after the suspects' arrests, Scottsdale detectives served a search warrant at a storage facility in Phoenix on August 1 and recovered 10 stolen appliances directly related to the burglaries in Paradise Valley and Scottsdale. The estimated value of the recovered property is about $65,000. Detectives are working to reunite the owners with the recovered property.
