Off-duty nurse saves 4-year-old from drowning
On June 1, several Scottsdale families were enjoying some sun and water play at a community pool. Shelby became distracted chatting with other moms when her 4-year-old son Ryan slipped out of his puddle jumpers and began to struggle in the water. Shelby soon realized he was not within sight and found him at the bottom of the pool. Thankfully, help was nearby.
Martial arts students save man in cardiac arrest
Father’s Day will be extra special for some families this year. Richard Farkas was attending class at the Aikido Studio on May 30 when he suffered a cardiac arrest. Fellow students Dennis Scribner and Santosh Rao, who also happen to be doctors, immediately recognized the problem and jumped into action, calling 911 and beginning CPR.
Public Safety Teen Academy underway for 40 Valley teens
Almost 40 teens are gaining life skills while learning about future careers in law enforcement and fire services June 5-9 at the Scottsdale Public Safety Teen Academy. This is the 11th year that Scottsdale Police and Fire departments offer a total public safety experience, which includes exposure to both police and fire training.

Fire Chief Tom ShannonAs Fire Chief of the City of Scottsdale Fire Department, I have the opportunity to serve in a destination community for both citizens and visitors.  Scottsdale is fortunate to have the finest fire service professionals in the state. The men and women of SFD are highly trained, extremely motivated, well educated, and loyally focused on their core mission of  caring for the community.

Scottsdale Fire has a rich history of service to a growing Scottsdale and now offers comprehensive fire, hazardous incident response and emergency medical services in a diverse service area which includes densely populated residential, robust entertainment districts, major corporate and industrial providers, and the world famous wild land McDowell Sonoran Preserve. SFD provides a response and prevention solution for this diverse geography encompassing 184 square miles of which 57 miles are highly valued preserve.

Scottsdale Fire is a core member of the Phoenix Regional Dispatch and Deployment system commonly known as automatic aid.  This system ensures that the closest available appropriate resource responds to calls for service regardless of municipal jurisdiction and that an orderly and reliable incident command system is utilized.

Your SFD Firefighters have bravely and successfully confronted the hazards of our growing urban environment, and continue to mitigate complex life-safety problems through risk management, strategic planning, disciplined deployment, and an aggressive fire attack and rescue philosophy. The hard-working professionals of the SFD are dedicated first and foremost to guarding the quality of life for the citizens and visitors of our community through multi-dimensional emergency response and the protection of life, property, and the environment.

Put simply, we are sworn to “care.”  It is our mission and promise.
