What is direct potable reuse (DPR)?DPR model

Most water utilities reuse their water in some capacity. Returned water is processed, treated, and then sent to a natural buffer – like a lake, stream, or aquifer – where the water can then be retrieved, treated, and sent into the potable water system.

DPR takes away the natural buffer and serves the water directly to the customer.

Scottsdale Water is the only permitted facility in Arizona to offer this water resource. After recycled water is treated, it undergoes several more purifying processes: ozonation, membrane ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet photolysis. The final product results in a water quality which exceeds that of bottled water.

Comparing Scottsdale’s advanced treated recycled water to bottled water

Scottsdale’s state-of-the-art water quality lab tested a leading bottled water brand to the same standards used for the recycled water produced at the AWT Plant. The tables below include testing results for everything that was detected in either water systems when tested. The second table lists more than 100 additional substances that were non-detectable in either water – down to the part per million.
