An important Do and Don’t from Scottsdale Water during COVID-19 pandemic

In this time of uncertainty and misinformation, Scottsdale Water is issuing two big Dos and Don’ts for customers related to the spread of coronavirus and the COVID-19 pandemic:

Scottsdale Water, like all municipal water suppliers, uses chlorine for disinfection. Chlorine is extremely effective in removing and killing pathogens and viruses, including the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19.  Additionally, coronavirus is not a waterborne pathogen, meaning the virus cannot survive in water. Your tap water is safe to drink. (And in these times of necessity shortages, isn’t it great to know that water is one less thing to worry about stocking up on?)

Additional information about your drinking water, including Scottsdale’s annual Water Quality Reports, is available on our Drinking Water web page. More information on the safety of drinking water amid the coronavirus pandemic is also available on the EPA’s websitelinks to external site.

This cannot be overstated…do not flush any paper products other than toilet paper!
With the unprecedented toilet paper shortage facing so many of us, people will inevitably need to rely on baby wipes, "flushable" wipes, paper towels, tissue or other paper items for personal cleaning. These items do not break down in the sewer system and can cause costly backups into your home or street and can significantly impact our wastewater treatment plants.

Scottsdale Water is already adjusting operational procedures and increasing inspections and screening at its treatment plants, but customers have to be aware that the real threat of sewer system blockages is in the laterals leading into people’s homes and in the collection system in their streets.

If you have to use something besides toilet paper, please dispose of those items in the trash.
