Planned Improvements to Jackrabbit Road & Miller Road Intersection

Project Update

Construction work is set to begin at the intersection of Jackrabbit and Miller roads April 15. Work will take place between the hours of 6 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday - Friday. Occasional night and weekend work may be needed. Lane restrictions will be in place and half of the roadway will be closed at a time, with flaggers controlling the traffic flow.  Access to homes will be provided.  

Work will begin with changes to the curbs and sidewalk ramps.  In May, electrical work will take place and the new crossing beacon will be installed. The roadway will be slurry sealed and restriped at the end of the project which is scheduled to be complete in mid-June.  

 

Project Overview

Improvements are being made to the intersection of Jackrabbit Rd. and Miller Rd. that will enhance pedestrian access to the AZ canal path and improve driver awareness. 

Intersection and roadway improvements include:

  • A High visibility crosswalk to align with the AZ Canal path
  • Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) devices
  • Trail Crossing signs
  • Narrowing vehicle travel lanes at the curve to provide an east side buffer
  • Removing landscaping at the curve to improve visibility
  • Passive detection for eastbound trail connection users

Project History

A traffic study of the intersection was initiated following receipt of a citizen petition requesting improved pedestrian safety at Jackrabbit Rd. and Miller Rd. The proposed improvements received unanimous support from the community, and the project was approved by the Transportation Commission in January of 2023. Money from the Transportation Sales Tax will fund the design and construction of the project.
