Alley to Curbside

The City of Scottsdale is discontinuing alley trash collection from most Scottsdale homes and moving to curbside service. This transition began in January 2021 and will take about four years to complete.

Curbside trash collection will:

  • make alleys a cleaner, safer space
  • reduce the number of citizen complaints related to excessive garbage in the alley
  • reduce damage, wear and tear to trash collection vehicles due to the conditions of the alleys
  • help recover all disposal costs which will help to keep fees for solid waste services low

No changes are being made to:

  • Recycling service which will continue to be picked up curbside
  • Brush/Bulk Collection service which will continue to be picked up in the alley

The days that trash and recycling are collected will remain the same. However, the move to curbside trash collection will result in some modifications to service.

When will my curbside service begin?

The transition from alley to curbside trash pickup began in January 2021 and will take place over a four-year period. You will be notified by mail prior to the change when it is time from your home to move from alley to curbside service. Some alleys have been identified where the transition to curbside service will not be able to take place due to other circumstances.

To determine if and when your service is transitioning to curbside, please download the map or use the Find My Pick-Up Schedule tool.

New trash containers will be delivered to the front of your home. The last alley collection will take place that week and the old containers will be removed immediately following collection. Please begin using the new containers as soon as they are delivered and place them curbside for collection the following week. To add additional trash containers at a fee, please call 480-312-5600

How will upcoming changes affect my service?

Trash Collection

You currently share a large, 300-gallon trash container with your neighbors. The City will be providing you with a new, smaller 90-gallon container that will be used solely by your household. On your scheduled collection day, please place your container on the street with wheels against the curb by 5 a.m. and remove it the same day. Keep your container at least four feet from parked cars, mailboxes and other obstacles that may prevent our crews from picking it up. Please don’t overfill your container – the lid must be completely closed per Maricopa County Health Department standards.

Recycling Collection

Your recycling service will not be affected by this change and will continue to be picked up on your scheduled collection day. Please place your container on the street with the wheels against the curb by 5 a.m. and remove it the same day. To learn more, view a complete list of items that are collected as part of the City of Scottsdale’s recycling program.

Brush/Bulk Collection

Your Brush/Bulk collection service will not be affected by this change and will continue to be picked up in the alley. Please remember to separate your brush material from your bulk material by at least three feet, in neat piles, so they may be easily collected. All brush and/or bulk items must be placed in the alley by 5 a.m. on the Monday of your collection week.
