Senator Martha McSally slated to be keynote speaker for Veterans Day commemoration

Senator Martha McSally, a United States Air Force combat veteran and Arizona's junior United States Senator, is scheduled to be the keynote speaker for the city's annual Veterans Day commemoration.

The event takes place at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, 7301 E. Indian Bend Road. It is free and open to the public.

McSally served in the Air Force from 1988 to 2010 and rose to the rank of colonel before retiring. One of the highest-ranking female pilots in the history of the service, McSally was the first American woman to fly in combat following the 1991 lifting of the prohibition on female combat pilots.

She was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2014. She served two terms as the U.S. Representative for Arizona's 2nd congressional district. Governor Doug Ducey appointed McSally to fill the U.S. Senate seat that opened with the passing of John McCain. She assumed that office in January 2019.

Army veteran JB Spisso also will be a guest speaker. He is a U.S. Army combat veteran who served 26 years, including 10 years with the elite 75th Ranger Regiment before retiring with the rank of sergeant major. Spisso went on to start his own leadership and coaching consultancy, and he is the author of the book Warrior Leadership.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Arizona Band kicks off the program at 3 p.m. with a half-hour of patriotic music.

The Veterans Day program also will feature Scottsdale historian and veteran Len Marcisz, Vi at Silverstone retirement community veterans, the Police and Fire Honor Guards and bugler Gil Gifford.

Refreshments are provided courtesy of Shamrock Foods Company and the Wildflower Bread Company.
