When Valley residents were asked to show the nation why there’s no place like McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park they went all aboard – voting and posting the Scottsdale park’s way to being named the best park in the U.S.
The public pushed this Arizona gem to the national title through more than 3,500 online votes and approximately 2,400 Instagram posts as the iconic railroad park faced off against Amerson River Park in Macon, Georgia.
The winner was determined through an online vote and a tally of Instagram posts. McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park earned the most, capturing the 2019 ELGL Knope Award for the nation’s best park or open space.
Engaging Local Government Leaders sponsors the award, and it is named for Deputy Parks Director Leslie Knope from the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation. The award recognizes the best places in local government, which this year focused on the best publicly-owned local park or open space.
The bracket-style contest started with a field of the top 32 parks in the United States owned and managed by local governments.
“The railroad park would like to sincerely thank all of those who voted, posted photos on social media and helped support the park and the city of Scottsdale through this really exciting contest,” the park’s Operation’s Supervisor Nick Molinari said. “We are blessed to have such dedicated community support and there’s no way we would have come out on top without the enthusiastic support of our visitors, families and non-profit board. The park’s staff also deserve a ton of credit. They put in the work every day to make the Railroad Park a special place.”
