SFD honors Outstanding Achievements

Scottsdale Fire Department recently recognized outstanding employee and volunteer achievements at its annual ceremony in December at the Charro Lodge at Scottsdale Stadium.

“The past year has challenged all of us to stay positive and continue to do great work,” said Fire Chief Tom Shannon. “This group of people highlight the dedication to excellence and the ability to live the ‘We Care for You’ mission.  We are proud to have them represent the best of the best.”

Those celebrated for being outstanding members or friends of the fire department were:

  • Community Partner of the YearMcDowell Sonoran Conservancy for collaborative efforts to protect the Preserve and its users through wildfire prevention, educational campaigns for hiker safety, and training Stewards in First Aid and CPR.
  • Volunteer of the Year Patty Worbs for her great work in the Home Safe Home program, which addresses fall and fire risks in the homes of our older residents.
  • Civilian Employee of the YearDavid Getz for his untiring dedication to extract data to make educated decisions for Fire Operations, resolve IT issues for the field, and provide event support.
  • Firefighter of the YearFirefighter Ty Boulos for providing peer support for new firefighters, assisting with firefighter fitness courses for all crews, and orchestrating a Station Steward Program to improve communications within the department.
  • Officer of the Year Captain Bill Gutman for his attention to detail, dedication to mentoring and coaching his crews, technical expertise, particularly in the area of Technical Rescue and Helicopter Operations, and his ability to communicate the mission of Scottsdale Fire.
  • Chief’s Award for Outstanding ServiceTroy Lutrick for overseeing and managing the City of Scottsdale response to the Coronavirus pandemic.  His leadership has been a culmination of years of experience managing major events throughout the Valley and Country.
  • Meritorious ServiceBobby Kohnen jumping into action to respond to a child drowning next door while he was recovering from knee surgery.

“We honor our award winners and know they are just an example of the dedication all of our staff have to the residents and visitors of Scottsdale,” Shannon said.
