Scottsdale Water is honored to be one of five utilities nationwide featured in one of the EPA’s newest management publications, Effective Utility Management in Action, Utility Case Examples. The case examples inform utilities about how their peer water service providers have integrated Effective Utility Management – a utility-specific continual improvement program – into their day-to-day operations and future planning initiatives. The EUM approach is based on measurable achievement in Ten Attributes of an Effectively Managed Utility and Five Keys to Management Success.
Scottsdale Water implemented the Effective Utility Management process in 2014 as an additional tool for strategic planning and process and service enhancement. Every year, Scottsdale Water’s management team selects up to three of the ten EUM attributes to focus on improving during the next fiscal year. Many of the utility’s landmark initiatives, including the award-winning Scottsdale Water Citizen Academy, Apprenticeship Program, Technology Master Plan and Choose Tap! campaign and water trailer, have come out of the EUM process.
The EPA’s case study publication describes many of Scottsdale Water’s EUM-driven strategic initiatives, Scottsdale’s approach to EUM’s five Keys to Management Success and lessons learned after years of implementing Effective Utility Management.
