HEADLINES

Public invited to Scottsdale City Council candidate forum. The Scottsdale Independent is hosting a candidate forum from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at City HallScottsdale Video Network will air the forum live. Scottsdale voters will elect three Scottsdale City Council members Tuesday, Nov. 6. The five candidates seeking seats are incumbents Kathy Littlefield, David Smith and Linda Milhaven; the challengers are Bill Crawford and Solange Whitehead.

Mayor proclaims "Active Aging Week," Sept. 23-29. The International Council on Active Aging stresses that people can significantly improve the quality of their later years by staying active and fully engaged in life. It believes that all individuals have the capability of embracing life within the dimensions of wellness. Scottsdale Senior Services provides programming, services and events that align with this philosophy. Meet some folks who take advantage of active aging. #ActiveAgingScottsdale

EVENTS

Eldorado Park hosts Grand Ole Fashioned Picnic. Grab your blanket and picnic basket and join us at Eldorado Park from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sep. 22, for this family fun-filled event. Enjoy games, live music, inflatables, food vendors and city informational booths. 

Attend the Brazilian Day Arizona Festival Saturday. Celebrate Brazilian Independence Day at the largest festival of its kind in the Valley. The event will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Listen to Brazilian bands, watch colorfully-dressed dancers and enjoy a variety of food at this family-friendly and lively event. Admission fees apply.

"Lights on After School" highlights importance of out-of-school activities. Free family-friendly fun - including culinary, interactive booths, entertainment and art - takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Museum of the West.

Enjoy Scottsdale ArtWalk - an American original. From 7 to 9 p.m. every Thursday year 'round, Old Town galleries open their doors to collector and casual patrons alike to enjoy featured artists, a cultural environment and refreshments.

McDowell Sonoran Preserve's Fraesfield Trailhead closed for improvements. This trailhead will be closed for several months starting Monday, Sept. 24. During this time, the city will be adding restrooms and other trailhead support amenities such as parking, signage, shaded seating and drinking fountains.  The Fraesfield Trailhead is at 13400 E. Rio Verde Drive.

Take county's emergency preparedness survey. The Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management conducts an annual survey to gauge personal emergency preparedness and the effectiveness of its outreach campaigns. The 10-question survey takes only minutes and is confidential. Take the survey through Sept. 30.

Scottsdale Arts increases community arts grants by 66 percent. Scottsdale Arts announced a 66 percent increase in the annual award pool for its Community Arts Grant Program. The program provides funding to Valleywide nonprofit arts and cultural organizations for projects that serve the Scottsdale community. Scottsdale Arts awarded $100,000 to 19 organizations for general operating support and projects for Fiscal Year 2018-19.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Community Mediation Program helps solve neighborhood issues. Trained volunteer mediators help neighbors work through issues such as barking dogs and landscape disputes to achieve mutually agreeable solutions.  

Free admission to local museums is part of Smithsonian magazine's Museum Day. Both the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West offer free admission Saturday, Sept. 22. Tickets, which provide free admission for two people, are available to download at Smithsonian Museum Day. A "Get A Ticket" button will appear on the Smithsonian website and you will be asked to enter your name, email address and confirm the museum you wish to attend before downloading your ticket.
