Scottsdale Update - June 6, 2019

HEADLINES

Team up with city employees to save lives at June 13 blood drive. Earn superhero status when you donate at the city's blood drive from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13, Scottsdale City Hall parking lot, 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd. Blood donations help save lives in times of unexpected tragedy and emergencies. Make an appointment to save a life. Please drink extra water and eat a meal prior to donating.

Pinnacle Peak Park and trail closed June 10-11. Trail damage repair from a May rockslide takes place Monday and Tuesday, June 10-11. The park and trail reopen at 5 a.m. Wednesday, June 12.

Progress continues on repairs to the Drinkwater underpass and Civic Center surface. A continuous concrete wall is under construction to provide bridge support and take weight off the columns. Other restoration activities to come include placement of a topping slab, waterproofing, installation of a drainage system for the bridge, electrical work, concrete work, irrigation and landscaping. Once finished, the structure will be sound and functional for current uses and create a platform above for what's to come to Civic Center. The project is on schedule and will be complete in the fall

Fire & Water: Restoring Arizona's Forests - Scottsdale was one of the first cities in the Valley to sign on to support forest thinning efforts, which help combat mega-wildfires. Find out why forest thinning efforts are key to restoring our forests and protecting our watersheds, which provide water to Valley cities like Scottsdale. The program airs at 4 and 9 a.m.; and 1, 5, 8 and 11 p.m. Mondays on Scottsdale Video Network (Cox channels 11 and 1011; Century Link channel 8001).


EVENTS

It's the "grandmudder" of events - Mighty Mud Mania, Saturday. Come sling mud at this year's Mighty Mud Mania from 7 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 8, at Chaparral Park, 5401 N. Hayden Road. This free event offers muddy obstacle courses for people of all ages and ability levels.  

Avoid the danger of UV rays by taking a "Sunset Swim." UV rays can damage skin in less than 15 minutes. Swim under the stars at Sunset Swims from 5-9 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at Eldorado Aquatic Center; and Friday, June 21, at McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic Center. Both events run from 5-9 p.m. Regular entrance fees apply. 

McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park's concert series continues through June 30. Enjoy a variety of local bands from 7:30-9 p.m. Sundays at the park. Bring a blanket, chairs and snacks – or buy munchies on-site. Train and carousel tickets are $2 each with kids younger than 2 riding free with a paying adult.

Enjoy Scottsdale ArtWalk - an American original. From 7-9 p.m. every Thursday, Old Town galleries open their doors to collector and casual patrons alike to enjoy featured artists, a cultural environment and refreshments.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Friday is last day to wash away your library fines with bottled water donations. Scottsdale libraries are waiving 50 cents in fines for every bottled water donation, up to $24.99. The bottled water will be distributed to Vista del Camino's "hydration station" to assist vulnerable citizens during the summer.

Southwest Gas continues to replace aging gas lines in Old Town. This upgrade to our natural gas infrastructure takes place through Friday, June 28. Work will take place during daytime hours, Mondays through Saturdays. Traffic control may remain in place even during non-work hours to protect the work zones. Access to businesses will be maintained. For additional questions, call the project hotline at 602-532-6100.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Learn how a Polish Catholic swimmer survived Auschwitz to live the American dream. Author Katrina Shawver shares highlights of her award-winning biography, "Henry – A Polish Swimmer's True Story of Friendship from Auschwitz to America." The free program runs from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, at the Civic Center Library.
