Scottsdale Update - June 20, 2019

HEADLINES

Five Scottsdale companies named finalists for AZ Innovation Challenge. The Arizona Commerce Authority announced 15 finalists for the Spring 2019 Arizona Innovation Challenge. Five are located in Scottsdale: AdviNOW Medical, Heads Up Health, LIGHTHOUSE, OraVu and TouchPoint Solution. This challenge is Arizona's leading technology commercialization competition, awarding up to $3 million.

Pima Freeway construction impacts city streets. The Arizona Department of Transportation continues widening and improving the Loop 101 from Interstate 17 in Phoenix to Pima Road in Scottsdale. Here are current restrictions:

Scottsdale Road Interchange: 

  • Westbound 101 off ramp is closed through mid-August. Drivers should use Hayden Road or 64th Street.
  • Eastbound 101 on ramp will be closed starting at 9 p.m. Monday, June 24. Drivers should use 64th Street or Hayden Road.

Hayden Road Interchange: 

  • Westbound 101 on ramp is closed through mid-August. Drivers should use the westbound frontage road to Scottsdale Road or Pima/Princess to access westbound 101.
  • Eastbound 101 off ramp will be closed starting at 9 p.m. Monday, June 24. Drivers should use Scottsdale Road or Pima/Princess.

All eastbound lanes on the 101 from 56th Street to Scottsdale Road will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, June 21, to 5 a.m. Monday, June 24.

EVENTS

McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park's concert series continues through June 30. Enjoy a variety of local bands from 7:30-9 p.m. Sundays at the park. Bring a blanket, chairs and snacks – or buy munchies on-site. Train and carousel tickets are $2 each with kids younger than 2 riding free with a paying adult.

Enjoy Scottsdale ArtWalk - an American original. From 7-9 p.m. every Thursday, Old Town galleries open their doors to collector and casual patrons alike to enjoy featured artists, a cultural environment and refreshments.

Be red, white and cool at the Scottsdale 4th of July Celebration. It’s a Fortnite 4th Experience inside a cool family-friendly patriotic playground from 4-9:30 p.m. Thursday, July 4, at WestWorld, 16601 N. Pima Road. Watch expert gamers live in action, play laser tag, build forts and enjoy Fortnite contests. The event also features a K9 stunt show, pony rides, a petting zoo, a bull riding show, carnival games and food. End the evening with a spectacular firework show. Learn more and get tickets.

"Beat the Heat" provides assistance to more than 180 homebound Scottsdale seniors. The city's Human Services staff recently delivered care packages consisting of water, food, snacks and other relief items. While delivering the packages, social workers were able to assess the needs of homebound seniors. With the support of Scottsdale Community Partners and local donors, the city provided an estimated $18,500 in supplies to program recipients.

"Safety Stand Down" addresses cardiac risk. Firefighters have a 300 percent increased risk for cardiac disease over the regular population according to a FEMA study. This significant danger to firefighters’ lives has special consideration during the annual Safety Stand Down observed this week by fire departments across the country. Learn more.

Back to School program needs your donations. Students need new clothing, socks, underwear, shoes, backpacks and school supplies. Learn how you can donate items or money.  

Aquatic centers available for private rentals. Consider  McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic Center or Eldorado pool for a unique party venue. Both facilities are available to rent from 6-9 p.m. Saturdays through August.
