Mayor's Constitution Day Contest showcases American pride; offers prizes and praise. To commemorate the signing of the United States Constitution, Scottsdale Mayor W. J. "Jim" Lane is inviting students to participate in his annual Constitution Day Contest. This year's contest includes an art/video category in addition to the essay category. Prizes will be awarded in both categories for three age groups. Deadline is Monday, Sept. 17.
Scottsdale park wins "Best City Park" in magazine's reader survey. McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park took top honors in Phoenix Magazine's 2018 Best of the Valley Reader's Picks survey. The 30-acre park, located on the southeast corner of Indian Bend and Scottsdale roads, is one of the most unique parks in the country. Visitors can take a ride on the Paradise & Pacific Railroad and the 1950-vintage Allan Herschell carousel. The park also features a variety of shops and museums, one-of-a-kind playgrounds and large grassy areas. Other notable Scottsdale "bests" include the Scottsdale Culinary Festival (Best Food Festival); Tom's Thumb (Best Hike); Harkins Camelview (Best Movie Theater); and TPC Golf Course (Best Public Golf Course).

Scottsdale Fire Station 613, located near Hayden and Jomax roads, is a new facility that replaces a "temporary" modular building that was used for more than 20 years. The $5.1 million station was funded with General Obligation bonds approved by Scottsdale voters in 2015. The bonds will be repaid through the secondary property tax

Celebrate National Senior Citizens Day, Tuesday. The Via Linda Senior Center will transform into a fabulous five-star Vegas resort from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21. The $5 registration fee for Scottsdale residents includes food, games and live entertainment.
