Operating electric scooters in Scottsdale

Electric scooter rentals available through different providers offer new transportation options for people in Scottsdale – but some specific rules apply.

The city is working with these providers to make sure those who rent their machines understand how to ride and park them legally.

These devices are legally defined as motorized skateboards and the city has specific ordinances governing them, which can be found in Scottsdale Revised Code Sections 17-90 through 17-97. Here’s a quick summary of the rules for electric scooters:

It’s OK to ride electric scooters here:

  • On public streets with speed limits 25 miles per hour or less
  • On private property with permission of the property owner
  • On public roadways within a city park (such as a park’s parking area)

It’s not OK to ride electric scooters here:

  • On sidewalks or multiuse paths (including paths in the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt)
  • In bike lanes on public streets
  • Anywhere that has been posted or designated prohibiting “skateboards”

It’s OK to park electric scooters here:

  • On private property with permission of the property owner

It’s not OK to park electric scooters here:

  • On sidewalks or other public property

Electric scooter riders on public street must follow all applicable state and city traffic laws.

If you are operating an electric scooter after sunset it must be equipped with appropriate head and rear lamps.

Electric scooter sharing companies are privately owned and operated and are not affiliated with the city.

If you have a concern about a scooter’s location, it's best to contact the appropriate company directly. Contact information is located on the scooter.
