Description: The Scottsdale Concert Band will complete its 43rd season with a free concert titled "Magical Musical Tour" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 14, in the Performing Arts Center at Scottsdale Community College.
A highlight of the program will be “Black Dog,” a rhapsody for solo clarinet and wind ensemble, performed by the band’s principal clarinetist, Selena Ryan.
The work, by Scott McAllister, is inspired by classic hard rock music, such as Led Zeppelin’s rhapsodic-style song “Black Dog.” The clarinet solo takes the role of the lead singer in a hard rock band with its extreme range and emotions juxtaposed with the pyrotechnic solos in true “Hendrix” fashion. The rhapsody begins with a long solo cadenza, which introduces most of the material in the work.
Also on the “Magical Musical Tour” will be “Somewhere in Time,” from the motion picture by the same name; “Curtain Up,” by Alfred Reed; George and Ira Gershwin’s “Strike Up the Band”; and ”The Beatles: Love.”
Ryan holds a degree in music education with a double emphasis in clarinet and composition from Northern Arizona University. She currently is the Prelude Choir director in the Chandler Children's Choir, where she teaches young singers the foundations of healthy vocal production and rehearsal etiquette. She also teaches clarinet students from around the world.
The Scottsdale Concert Band, Scottsdale’s own award-winning community band, is directed by Michele Kalo, sponsored by Scottsdale Community College and performs four concerts per year. This is its 43th season.
