Osborn Road Pedestrian Crossing
The city of Scottsdale and Scottsdale Healthcare are working together on a plan to improve the pedestrian crossings on Osborn Road between Drinkwater Boulevard and Scottsdale Road. In addition to increasing pedestrian safety, the plan will reduce traffic collisions in the area.
Work is expected to begin in September to remove the current pedestrian traffic signal at the crosswalk and install two raised median islands in the center of the street.
The medians will allow pedestrians to cross the street halfway and wait safely for a break in traffic before continuing to cross the street. The first island will be at the existing pedestrian crosswalk location and the other will be west of the staff parking lot entrance.

Construction on the project is expect to begin in mid-September, and will take approximately one month to complete.
Why The Change?
- The Drinkwater Boulevard & Osborn Road intersection has a high collision rate
- Due to the close proximity of the pedestrian and traffic signal they are difficult to coordinate
- Removing the p
edestrian signal will reduce traffic collisions at Drinkwater and Osborn - The majority of pedestrians crossing Osborn are from the employee parking lot and administration building on the south side to the hospital on the north side
- Field observations showed many pedestrians now cross when they see a gap and do not wait for a walk signal to cross the street
- Typically, there are gaps in traffic flow on Osborn to make this type of pedestrian crossing appropriate for this area
