Safety Improvements for Hayden Road - Pinnacle Peak to Happy Valley
In January 2009, Transportation staff presented a recommendation to the Transportation Commission for an exception to the city’s Neighborhood Traffic Management policy to allow a proposed neighborhood traffic management project on Hayden Road between Pinnacle Peak and Happy Valley Road. The Commission did not approve the exception, but directed staff to review safety issues along this stretch of road and implement improvements.
A safety analysis identified several options for neighborhood consideration, aimed at enhancing pedestrian/youth safety and reducing speeds:
Immediate (within one month):
- Replace or install object markers to better define objects along the roadway
- Police enforcement of existing speed limit
Short term (within 2-6 months):
- Install permanent driver feedback signs
- Narrowing the road using striping changes, such as:
- Adding a center two-way left turn lane
- Adding bike lanes in the middle and south sections of Hayden OR
- Adding a solid white edge line to both sides of Hayden
Mid term (within 1+ year):
- Add asphalt at the north end of Hayden to provide
- Bike lanes on both sides of Hayden
- Paved shoulders
- Left turn lanes
Up to 5 years (depending on available funding):
- Complete the sidewalk to Happy Valley Road
- Build a multi-use non-motorized trail
