Mohave School Safety Audit
September 2009 UPDATE
In September, Mohave Middle School began implementing the new student drop-off and pick-up plan that was agreed upon by residents, Scottsdale Unified School District and city Transportation staff. The plan is working well and reducing the number of parked and idling vehicles on 86th Street. Recently SUSD installed new striping in the east parking lot to make this plan permanent.
City staff appreciates all the time and input that went into to developing this plan and for the Mohave parents' cooperation with the school staff to make it work. The goal as always is to keep our students safe.
Mohave Middle School Safety UPDATE
On Monday, April 27, Transportation staff met with residents, the principal of Mohave Middle School and a representative from the Scottsdale Unified School District to discuss all the options presented at the neighborhood meeting on April 6th. Thank you to everyone who provided input at the meeting or via phone or e-mail after the meeting.
Residents in the area communicated several concerns regarding safety. They requested “no parking” signage along 86th Street near the school, and felt replacing the double yellow striping on 86th Street would slow traffic speeds and keep vehicles in their respective lanes during school drop-off and pick-up times. They also suggested bike lanes be added to 86th Street, and wanted to make better use of Jackrabbit for student drop off & pick up.
After reviewing the input received, and after discussions with school district representatives, the following changes are planned to occur on 86th Street before the end of the school year:
- Install No Parking signs on 86th Street between Valley View and Jackrabbit
- Work with the school to extend the drop-off/pick up area inside the main parking lot
- The principal will request that staff not park along Jackrabbit to allow for better student pick up in that area
Also, over the summer, we will install a double yellow centerline along 86th Street from Chaparral to McDonald. Waiting until after school is out to install the centerline will assure no disruption to school operations and will allow staff time to observe the drop off/pick up process to determine the appropriate location for the double yellow line. This is scheduled to be completed the week of July 6th.
If these changes do not bring the desired results by the end of the 2009 school year, then Transportation staff will work with the school administration to also restrict parking on Jackrabbit to improve drop-off/pick up in the small parking lot area with the trash containers. Staff does not recommend bike lanes be installed at this time.
