What is Lifeguarding?

Being a lifeguard is both fun and serious. In this job you will help keep Scottsdale pools safe and learn life-saving skills. You will also meet lots of new friends and spend your days by the pool.

What Will I Get Paid?

  • Lifeguard -  $9.77/hour
  • Instructor - $11.12/hour
  • Assistant Manager - $12.81/hour

Where Will I Work?

Scottsdale has four aquatic centers:

  • Cactus - 7202 E Cactus Rd.
  • Chaparral - 5401 N. Hayden Rd.
  • Eldorado - 2301 N. Miller Rd.
  • McDowell Mountain Ranch (MMR) - 15525 N. Thompson Peak Pkwy

What Steps Do I Need To Take?

Step 1: Get Certified

LIFEGUARD:
Class: American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (LGT) Class
Fee: $100 Residents; $150 Non Residents
Prerequisite: Minimum 15 years old, swim 300 yards (non-stop) and retrieve a 10 pound object from water within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
Participants must attend all classes. Refunds are not permitted
Course Description: You will learn professional lifeguard responsibilities, surveillance skills, rescue skills, first aid training and CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED (Automated External Defribrillation).

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR:

Class: Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Class
Fee: $120 Residents; $180 Non Residents
Prerequisite: Minimum 16 years old, must be able to demonstrate basic stroke competency equivalent with the American Red Cross Level 6. Demonstrate butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.

Step 2: Submit a City of Scottsdale Job Application

You can download a City of Scottsdale job application by visiting the city's Jobs page or you can pick one up at Human Resources, 7575 E. Main St. Applications must be turned in at the Human Resources office.


Step 3: Participate in a City of Scottsdale Skills Test Interview
