G.A.I.N. - Getting AZ Involved in Neighborhoods
G.A.I.N. or Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods is an annual event designed to unite neighbors and communities to help create safer neighborhoods. Formerly known as National Night Out, G.A.I.N. encourages residents to get together in their respective communities to promote safety, neighborhood communication and celebrate the successes of crime prevention through community involvement.

This Fall, the City will host the Neighborhood Watch Celebration Event. Originally known as the G.A.I.N. Kick-off, this event is designed to provide you with resources to not only make your G.A.I.N. party successful, but to also help you gather ideas on other events you can host all year long. In addition, we will be celebrating all of the efforts our Neighborhood Watch Captains are doing to keep their neighborhoods safe.

G.A.I.N. History
More than 10 Years Strong
In 1998, representatives from local Valley municipalities gathered together to brainstorm ways to reinvigorate Arizona residents in the planning of neighborhood block parties.
It was determined that planning annual National Night Out block parties (which take place in August nationally) was just too challenging for our residents living in the intense Arizona heat. It was suggested that the statewide event be moved to October, renamed and coincide with Public Safety Month.
Ten years later, communities Valley-wide are seeing an increase in G.A.I.N. participation every year.
In 2002, the City of Scottsdale hosted a formal kick-off event three weeks prior to G.A.I.N. night in order increase participation and block party registration. In both 2002 and 2003, 32 neighborhoods registered with the city to plan a block party.
With city-hosted G.A.I.N. Kick-Off events provided to residents every year, the numbers within Scottsdale continue to increase:
- 2004 - 39 registered block parties
- 2005 - 41 registered block parties
- 2006 - 41 registered block parties
- 2007 - 44 registered block parties
- 2008 - 32 registered block parties
- 2009 - 51 registered block parties
- 2010 - 53 registered block parties
- 2011 - 53 registered block parties
- 2012 - 49 registered block parties
