PSeudoephedrine ordinance update
On November 15, 2005, the Scottsdale City Council passed an ordinance requiring retailers to monitor sales of any over-the-counter (OTC) drugs containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, ingredients used in the illegal production of methamphetamine narcotics. This ordinance was effective beginning Monday, February 13, 2006.
On March 9, 2006, President Bush signed into law the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005 (CMEA)
. Some of the provisions of this new law became effective immediately (March 9, 2006) and others became effective on April 8, 2006. Other provisions become effective September 30, 2006.
As a result, the City of Scottsdale is not currently enforcing Ordinance No. 3647, because it has been superseded by the more stringent requirements of the CMEA.
Ordinance No. 3647 currently remains on the books in case the federal regulation is repealed or made less stringent.
