Families with children of all ages can participate in a friendly guitar video game competition, all while learning about the dangers of drugs at “Healthy Families Rock.” The free event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at Mountainside Middle School, 11256 N. 128th St., Scottsdale. Game competition registration will take place from 11 a.m. to noon on site. Space is limited and registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
“’Healthy Families Rock’ celebrates the nationally recognized ‘Family Day,’” says Event Chair Stephanie Siete, who also serves as the public relations director for Community Bridges, a drug treatment and prevention nonprofit. “The goal of ‘Family Day’ and this event is to bring together families to share a meal and conversation. Studies show families who spend quality time together will communicate more and that helps reduce alcohol and drug use, and other risky behaviors.”
“Healthy Families Rock” includes raffles (movie tickets, gift cards, Nintendo Wii™), free sandwiches to the first 500 attendees, food for sale and live music. In addition, information and resources to help educate parents about potential risky behaviors (see below) and positive ways to address them will be available.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, six risky behaviors contribute to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems in the United States. These behaviors often emerge during childhood and adolescence. They include inadequate physical activity; unhealthy dietary behaviors; alcohol and other drug use; tobacco use; sexual behaviors that may result in HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and unintended pregnancies; and behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence. These risks are also associated with meth use, which often has a late adolescent onset of first use, preceded by alcohol and other drug use.
The Northeast Valley Coalition Against Methamphetamine,* along with the Scottsdale and Cave Creek Unified School Districts, Scottsdale HealthCare, Arizona Together, Maricopa County Tobacco Use Prevention Program, Workshops for Youth and Family, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, Community Bridges, Partnership for a Drug-Free America, Scottsdale Prevention Institute, Teen Lifeline, Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS and AZ SADD are sponsoring this event.
*The Northeast Valley Coalition Against Methamphetamine is a local effort to coordinate a community-based response to the methamphetamine problem. The coalition includes the communities of Scottsdale, Carefree, Cave Creek, Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, Fountain Hills, Paradise Valley and Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
