Portable School Towers
Scottsdale is launching a new photo enforcement tool known as PORTABLE SCHOOL TOWERS, designed to increase safety around school zones.
Our plan is to rotate the two phone-booth sized mobile devices between Scottsdale’s 31 school sites when school starts at the beginning of August 2013. The Department began testing the devices in early June and on July 22, 2013 enforcement began with the first citations being issued. When school is not in session, the mobile units will be placed near other high-traffic areas for pedestrians such as parks, pools, shopping areas and sports fields.
The two PORTABLE SCHOOL TOWERS will replace two Mobile Speed Vans and will complement the remaining Mobile Speed Vans currently deployed to monitor traffic speeds along with nine fixed devices located throughout the city. Because of their larger size, the vans are not usable in about half of the city’s school zones.
The two PORTABLE SCHOOL TOWERS will function the same as Mobile Speed Vans. They will issue citations when a vehicle is traveling six miles per hour or more over the “15 MPH” found at Elementary School Zones when school is in session. They will also issue citations at 11 mph or more over the speed limit in all other areas where they are in use.
