Camelback Park Project History

On September 19, 2006, the Scottsdale City Council authorized the acquisition of the former Villa Monterey golf course for use as an open space park.  This 32-acre property is located on both sides of Hayden Road between Camelback and Chaparral roads.

After the property ceased being a golf course in 2004, it became an eyesore to the surrounding community.  There was hope that the private sector would be able to rehabilitate the property and make it work as a golf course.  However, multiple owners tried and did not succeed in part because two key features that help make a golf course profitable-- a clubhouse and driving range-- are not feasible at this location.

The deed restrictions on the property restrict it to golf course or open space park uses.   Other limitations include the fact that the property is in the Indian Bend Wash flood plain and it is zoned as O-S, or open space, which prohibits certain structures on the property.

The City made a formal offer to purchase the property on September 20, 2006, for $200,000-- the amount that the property was appraised at in August 2006.  On October 11, 2006, the city filed a condemnation action in Superior Court and also filed a request for immediate possession, which was granted in November 2006.

The city improved the former Villa Monterey golf course site in late 2006, removing dead vegetation, trimming trees and performing other landscape maintenance.  This maintenance work is ongoing.
