Grayhawk Community Park - FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions from OPEN HOUSE-MARCH 9, 2006.

1.    What will be the dimensions of dog run?
City standards are no less than 2 acres, turfed, with water and fenced
To give an idea of scale, Horizon is 3/4 acre
Chaparral is 2 acres but expanding to 4 acres

2.    Regarding the lighted ball fields, what is the commitment by city that they will stay as planned at this site?
Currently, they are planned. Ultimately, this is a council decision but city recognizes that lights are needed at these facilities.

3.    Is a soccer field needed with the CAP basin facility nearby?
Probably with what COS has heard from community and with CAP basin in such close proximity, we may delete soccer for one or two more ball fields.
Is there RR/concession planned?
Yes, in the middle of the ballfields.

4.    Is there any room for tennis courts?
We’ve had a lot of input for tennis. Baseball fields are the top priority but depending on interest for basketball, volleyball, these could possibly be switched to tennis. A Tennis center facility is planned for DC Ranch community- planned to be our 3rd public tennis facility-15 courts planned-currently not funded-suggest talking to city council folks to get moved up. The DC Ranch facility is a current existing approved bond project but not funded.

5.    Will the Drainage channel eliminate the current retention basin behind Boys & Girls club?
This will need to be determined during design phase.

6.    How about multi-use courts for others who want to participate in more passive recreation such as bocci, horseshoes?
If there is good interest probably could fit into plan.

7.    Light poles that will be 2 times as high as a building is a phenomenal concentration of lights which creates an aura for considerable distance all around. Is there technology to use taller poles? Tennis would only require lower poles as would other passive activities.
Also, is a swimming pool planned for this site?
Our standards are one pool for every 50,000 people. The pool for this service area is at MMR, another pool is not currently on plan.
Lighted ball fields - the higher you go is better for spill and glare, the higher you go the better ability to direct the light down. The lights are designed using photo metrics to light the fields only. Also, the lights are shielded so the light pointed down, will see some of the light source but better than used to be. The lights are remote controlled via timers and cell phones. Do not stay on all night. More efficient but they are there permanently. Can paint black, have galvanized, painted sky blue-whatever to help integrate. Number will depend on the number and configuration of poles.

8.    What about traffic and access to park?
This is a design consideration. We will work with traffic dept. and designers to work it out.

9.    What is the seating area for ball fields?
Typically bleachers.

10.    What will the Phase 2 Community Center include?
Not designed or funded, but envisioned for gym, elevated running track, climbing wall, meeting rooms-30,000 Square Feet

11.    Will there be pedestrian access under Hayden?
Trail underpass planned under Thompson Peak Parkway
Do not now status. Could look at for future, but expensive

12.    Will there be a Neighborhood Advisory body?
Yes, we can consider this but that is what these meetings are for. We can get into Charettes, however, no matter how many flyers, not everyone is notified. Thanks to help from Cliff for helping to get the word out.
But remember, this is a public park not just for Grayhawk.

13.    Will there be Adult activities at the Community Center?
We will have a variety of activities for all ages, including leisure programs such as cooking, etc.
What is the process to make the community center funded?
City Council final decision body for funding, project priority. There is talk of another bond in the future.

14.    What data does City use to determine # of constituents for facilities-how did we get to these amenities?
Basic premise is the over-all parks Master Plan.
Which facilities will serve constituents and satisfy each service area.
Some 20,000 kids in ball leagues with seasons of adult baseball etc.
Waiting lists.
Turn away teams due to no facilities.

15.    Tennis is a lifeline sport and we need courts now.
Scottsdale Ranch very popular
We understand tennis is very popular but we also have several neighborhood tennis courts and have another tennis facility planned at DC Ranch.

16.    Where can we find the Demographic information used to develop the amenities for this park?
Demographic information for the Parks Master Plan is on the parks web site.

17.    I am torn because I have kids who play baseball but also SW sectioned chief for USTA.
We can only do so much. We truly understand need for tennis. Again, USTA cannot get into Scottsdale Ranch because public usages is so high. We cannot use public funds to build a facility for USTA.
We offer league tennis until it fills up and we understand there is a need.
DC Ranch facility is planned for this.

18.    What time is Lights out?
Sunrise to 10:30 pm
Sports lights till 11 pm per ordinance but usually out by 10:30 pm.

19.    Parking - will it be part of Phase I
We’ll put in what is required for those amenities.

20.    Will there be a skate park at this facility?
One is currently being built at MMR facility.
Probably no room at this point for this location.

21.    What about a Roller skating rink?
Not in plan; maybe something considered for gym.

22.    When will you break ground?
Probably year from now or longer.

23.    What is the process for public input on the amenities?
Write on comment card
There is not enough room for tennis center and lighted ball fields at this site.

24.    Comment to build these amenities at DC Ranch and switch tennis to this facility.
DC Ranch site does not lend itself well to community center or lighted ball fields.
