What qualifies as a flotation device?
- Inflatable arm “floaties”.
- Swimsuits with built in flotation.
- Lifejackets.
- Inner tubes, Noodles, Rafts, Kickboards.
Why are flotation devices not permitted?
- Flotation devices give children a false sense of security in the water.
- Some caregivers use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision – there is NO substitute for supervision with children around water.
What should I do if I have a young child that cannot swim?
- You and your child can still enjoy our Aquatic Centers, however you must stay within arms reach of your child at all times to ensure the child’s safety.
- Sign your children up for learn to swim lessons. The City of Scottsdale offers swim lessons in the Summer, Fall and Spring. Ask our cashier or visit us on-line at recreation.scottsdaleaz.gov for more information.
- It is very difficult to teach a child that is used to wearing “floaties” and being vertical in the water to learn to swim. Actively supervise and encourage your child to get acclimated to the water without the use of a flotation device.
