Mayor's Constitution Day Contest deadline is Sunday. Students are invited to commemorate the signing of the Constitution by submitting art/video or an essay to the Mayor's Office. Prizes will be awarded in both categories for various age groups.

WaterReuse Association names Scottsdale Water's Citizen Academy "Public Education Program of the Year." This twice-a-year multi-week program provides residents an inside look at all facets of Scottsdale Water. A key part of the academy is the focus on Scottsdale's water reuse efforts with a tour inside the Advanced Water Treatment facility, widely recognized as one of the world's most innovative water purification projects.

Green rehab helps homeowner breathe easy. This city program helps qualified homeowners save energy and reduce their home's environmental impact by providing up to $65,000 in assistance toward owner-occupied housing improvements.

EVENTS

Find your treasure at "Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market." Vendors from across the country sell things chippy, rusty, vintage and handmade at this event Friday-Sunday, Sept. 15-17, at WestWorld. Live music and food trucks will be on-site to keep shoppers entertained and well-fed.

Scottsdale Mayor and Council Economic Development Breakfast Sept. 28. Each year Scottsdale's Economic Development Department hosts this event to share accomplishments and provide a brief look at what's on the horizon. This year's event is at 8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

Publications provide snapshots of Scottsdale. The city's annual report highlights key accomplishments, selected performance measures, an overview of the budget, and key priorities for the next year. The community profile provides a quick overview of our world-class community including features on business, tourism, special events, top attractions and the arts. Police Department offers free residential and commercial security surveys. A Crime Prevention Unit member will come to your home or business and suggest ways to make your property a less desirable target to criminals. Call 480-312-5000 to schedule an appointment.

Conservation tip: Skip a watering cycle after a heavy rain. There's still a good chance we'll experience a powerful storm in September. Also, if you have a power loss, be sure to check that your controller hasn't reverted to default settings.

USA Today names Hopi pottery exhibit one of 11 must-see fall exhibits. With tribal land located in northern Arizona, the Hopi's centuries-old ceramics tradition has earned international recognition. On Saturday, Sept. 16, Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West will open a permanent exhibit to show more than 65 Hopi pottery masterworks from one of the country's finest private collections.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Get an up-close look at the Scottsdale Fire Department through the Fire Citizens? Academy. Participants will learn about all areas of the department and its mission of caring for citizens and visitors within an action-packed environment. The program runs from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays for six weeks beginning Oct. 11. Participants must be 18 or older. Contact Linda Annoreno as soon as possible if you would like to attend.

Falls are the leading cause of injuries for older Americans. Learn how to avoid debilitating - and even deadly - falls at a free program from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. Transportation will be provided from the Granite Reef and Via Linda senior centers.

"Lights on After School" highlights importance of out-of-school activities. Free family friendly fun - including culinary, interactive booths, entertainment and art - takes place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at the Soleri Bridge.
